so this week, i’m focusing on marketing, now that the frenzy that is getting the bags printed is out of my hands. (those are to be completed by mid next week and i’ll be shipping them at the end of next week…). (insert girlie squeal here)
so this week, i’m focusing on spreading the word on durtbagz. i feel like i have a decent head-start, considering that i’ve got multiple friends in every time zone that will be carrying my bags and wearing my shirts. however, the ‘internets’ is a big place and it’s easy for small companies like me to get swallowed up in all of the nonsense. and i don’t know if you’ve noticed, but i’m not the first bag company to be online. weird.
i’m turning my focus this week to social networking sites. there are a few of these out there. it feels like a new one pops up daily. i’ve really been examining facebook lately and i like it much better than myspace. in fact, if i had to compare the two, facebook is like a super target, while myspace would be the wal-mart that you rarely go to because you consistently see girls you went to high school there, pregnant with their third child, with the first two being yanked around the store by their upper arms, screaming. yeah, that sounds about accurate.
for any of you that are on facebook, i recently started a durtbagz group so feel free to join in the nonsense. to make things more exciting i started a discussion about the type of mother nicole richie will be. that alone should get you to want to join. if that isn’t enough, i’ll be posting not only signs on there, but photos of the real deal after we shoot the gear next weekend. when you get your gear, i want you to post photos on there of you too. this is part of a little thing i like to call ‘operation: spreading the word.’
there are a few reasons why i like facebook much better than myspace. firstly, i have yet to receive one piece of spam on there. no one has wanted to be my ‘friend’ for the wrong reasons. no one has offered me hot singles and no one has offered me super sex or whatever…wait a minute…are other people getting this and i’m not? what, am i not hot enough? why wouldn’t i get that? why aren’t i getting offered super sex?!?! what’s that? no one is getting that because it’s facebook. okee. sorry ’bout that. wheew.
secondly, no one tries to get me to be a multi-level marketer and make $5k’s a day on facebook. i can’t tell you how much of this junk i get on myspace. it’s almost like facebook users are smarter and i have no idea how or why that has happened, but they absolutely comes across as much more intelligent than myspace users. i plan on doing much more social networking/marketing on facebook than myspace. quality, not quantity is what i am after and facebook fits right into that.
another site i’m becoming more involved with and really like is linkedin. this place is all business and it’s all about connections. if you search for a subject, it pulls up everyone you are connected with that fits under that category. it also places your connections in different degrees: 1st are your direct list of connections, 2nd are those peoples’ connections, 3rd are their connections. think of it as a business version of six degrees of separation. there are no pictures and no songs and no crazy backgrounds. it is all about you, your career, and the connections you are looking to make with others either in your industry or one you may be trying to get into. actually, whether or not you are into social networking, you should join linkedin. it’s free (you can upgrade for a fee) and networking in your industry is something everyone should be doing, whether you are looking to change jobs or not. it is always a good thing to just have your name out there.
i’m went to a webinar this morning (read: nerd gathering) on search engine marketing and how to get more traffic to your site. a few light-bulbs went off on how to get durtbagz on the map sooner rather than later. i’m excited to dig into everything we covered and begin the process of understanding all of it and incorporating aspects of it into my marketing plan.
here’s a question for you all: are you involved in any social networking sites other than the ones i’ve mentioned and if so, which ones do you like and why? i’m aware of quite a few more than these that i either already participate in or will research, but if anyone has any feedback on this subject, please give a shout out.
