Uhhh…what did she just say?? Miss Teen South Carolina 2007
if any of you have been in a hole the last 24 hours, you’ve missed the genius that is miss south carolina, lauren caitlin upton.
this poor girl was be-younced from the miss usa pageant when she was tagged with the super cryptic question of why statistics show that most americans can’t find the united states on a map. her response was some kind of cross between voodoo jibberish and a valley girl on ecstasy. amazing. and horrifying because i think she proved the statistics in her question correct.
after watching it painfully a few times on the news and then again on youtube as it was sent to me from friends, i’ve learned a couple of things.
1. i’m going to encourage my future children to be in pageants as it is obvious to me that they are the future leaders of the world.
2. you should always expect the unexpected.
and that is something that i can incorporate into durtbagz.
as we get closer to launch and start crossing more things off of the list, it’s something i’ve been thinking about more and more in all areas of this business.
when i was in sixth grade, my dad’s company burnt to the ground in a four alarm fire that i unknowingly saw from my elementary school playground during morning recess. we were talking about that the other day and as he pointed out, ‘there’s no manual for that. no one teaches you how to handle a fire that destroys everything in college. no one tells you what to tell your employees when they are standing there looking at you, asking you where they are supposed to show up tomorrow. no one tells you what to do to get things back up and running.’ hmm. good point. since that discussion, we have found a third party to back up our computers at a separate location so in case of a fire, we should be able to get a new computer, log in and at least be back online with all of our records intact. we’re also keeping our inventory at different locations so we’ll never be completely up a creek with out a paddle
a much smaller issue that has already come up is dealing with the screen printing of the bags. for some reason, on some of the totes, there is a really sticky substance left behind on the interior pocket. and it doesn’t come off with soap and water. we’re trying to figure out how to fix it for the next rounds of bags that will actually be sold. not nearly as serious as a fire, but how’d you like to pay for a bag that felt like glue on the inside of the pocket? i wouldn’t be a happy camper and i’d tell others about how unhappy i was with it. that is something i’d like to avoid.
there are a lot more examples i could go over, but you get the point. so far in this adventure, nothing has gone the way i envisioned it to. not that things have gone badly, not at all. just much differently than what i initially had in my head. this thing is one big learning experience. and after watching miss south carolina this morning, i’m thrilled that i’m not building this company on a stage, on national television. although, i look do great in an evening gown. and i can speak complete sentences on a good day.
