this is the second time i’ve started this post. i started it once earlier today, and titled it ‘i’m am so pissed off today’. then i deleted it, turned off my computer, and hiked squaw peak.
so here’s my slightly less fired up version. but still a little fired up.
here’s the thing: i met with my web ‘tards (they’ve totally earned that name) on friday afternoon to see the progress and make a list of the changes that they need to make. and, although all of the heavy lifting is done, the little things are not. still. still as in from the first list we made the first week of october. that will be six weeks ago on thursday. hmmm.
when we met with these guys and decided to go with them, we were told that it would take about 60 days to build the site. that was in june. now, in their defense, they had to wait on us to get shots of the bags to put on the template so that could be ok’d before we moved forward in the development. i gave them final approval on the template the first of august. let’s do the math. let’s just be even and say 30 days a month, we are now more than 90 days from the day i said we could move forward. that is in addition to the first month that it took to get the template okay (the time they were not waiting on me).
so, really, by now, we’re at 120 days of building a site. and it’s still not done. and as far as i can tell, some of the big parts don’t work like they should. meaning, they are not as user friendly as they should be. after playing around on the site this morning for a couple of hours, trying to figure out how to upload photos, i was fed up. i was trying to do it as a user to make sure that 1) it worked right and 2) that it was easy. neither of those goals were accomplished. that is when i wrote the ‘i am so pissed off today’ deal.
i fired off an email to my PM, saying that it wasn’t working like it was supposed to and that it was too hard and too busy. he called me and said that he’d get me a set of step-by-step instructions for uploading and that it was really simple. right. so simple that the admin of the site, the one that designed it, can’t figure it out? yep, sure seems simple to me.
also, he said in the meeting that the list of changes we made on friday should be done today and everything should be ready to roll on tuesday. he said it again on the phone this morning, i should start seeing the changes being made today.
it is now 4:09p…nary a change in sight. oh yeah, keep in mind that over 3/4 of the changes on the list were the same ones from october that still hadn’t been done. and i still don’t have the instructions on uploading my photos. obviously, it’s really just that simple.
is this right? is this how web sites get built? am i being impatient? or is this an unusual circumstance that i have the right to be irked about? i don’t know. i’ve never done this before. i can tell you that it feels like an unusual circumstance and my feeling seemed pretty validated on friday when my PM asked me when i came on board with this firm (shouldn’t you know?). when i told him june, he shook his head and said, “i don’t know what happened after our first PM left. i don’t know why all of these sites are so backed up.” to which i said,”you mean, mine’s not the only one?” and he replied,”oh no. we have some that are way more behind than this.” are you kidding me? thank god i yelled loud enough to be heard by them or durtbagz.com would totally just be another one in the pile somewhere. i smell a discount coming my way.
but seriously, can anyone give me any advice on this? it this typical? i know my site is a little unusual and more complex than just another retail site, but it’s not that much more complex. and it’s all things that have been done before so i just don’t get the complete lack of sticking to their word and sense of urgency.
i was hoping to launch a week from today, but at this point, i’d be happy to launch any day before christmas. this deal has pushed me to my limit of patience and for those of you that know me, i don’t have a ton to begin with. it is painful. someday, i’ll laugh. but not today. sorry for the downer, but today, i’ve just had it.
on a lighter note, saturday night, the husband and myself learned that you can tip a cab driver in quarters. they’ll take it. but they won’t take taco bell if you offer it to them. good lesson.
one more thing: the husband has started his own blog on…..food. i know, who could have guessed? check it out, he writes about his favorite haunts and the new ones we try out down here in the desert. it’s appropriately called eatingarizona. awesome.
