hi-ho, head bag lady, here, and this week, we’re going to ‘the muppet show’, aka the best show ever. durtbagz is here to bring you some serious inside info that you may not have known about deez muppets. yes, durtbagz was also along for the ride in the 70’s and 80’s when the show was hopping. duh.
everyone knows that jim henson was a serious durtbag and mastermind behind this incredible creation. he was also the voice of our favorite characters like kermit and ernie. what most people don’t know, is that he also created another little guy that had a pretty infamous voice, could lift things with his mind, and spoke in sentences that were backwards, they were. yes indeedy, jim also gave us yoda. true it is, created him, he did. okay, back to the muppets, now that we all have yoda’s voice in our heads. mmmm.
‘pigs in space’ was always a favorite piece of durtbagz on the show and one of the reasons was because the crew had the best names going. captain link hogthrob, first mate piggy, and dr. julius strangepork led this gang. oddly enough, these pigs actually were in space; twice. that’s right, the crew of the space shuttle columbia in 1981, was awakened by ‘pigs in space’ on two different mornings. boldly going where no swine had gone before.
the muppet show was one of the few that could pull off a character that no one could understand, but loved anyway. (unless you’re a fan of chewy.). beaker was, in a word: meep. he was always the victim of whatever nonsense was happening in muppet labs. what you probably didn’t know about beaker was that on three separate occasions, he actually spoke. as in, words. he said ‘bye bye’ in the ‘banana sharpener’. he also said ‘sadly temporary’ and ‘make-up ready’ in ‘the muppet movie’.
swedish chef was also slighty incomprehensible, but mostly, just plain awesome. his ‘language’ was created by jim henson listening to ‘how to speak mock swedish’ tapes in the car. his son, brian, said he would drive to work, listening to the tapes, trying to make a chicken sandwich or turkey casserole in mock swedish. on the days they rode together, they got a few odd stares. whatever, people, you were hearing the swedish chef being born, you lucky dillweeds.
all of the muppets have backgrounds, including life before they were famous. (awesome) miss piggy, is no exception. turns out, before her big break in a bacon commercial, she was from a farm, just like any other durty pig. her father chased sows and her mother never went to school. fearing this life for herself, piggy ran away to the city. her life was hard because “people got all the jobs; pigs had to take what was left”. she took a job, walking the sandwich board for a BBQ stand and calling herself ‘laverne‘ when she landed the commercial. that led to a gig as the mascot for a sports show called ‘pigskin parade’, which then led to ‘the muppet show’.
animal was the most popular member of ‘electric mayhem’, the band on the muppet show. turns out, he was also the mascot for the US snowboarding team in 1998, in nagano japan. huh. makes sense, since he looks like one.
the muppet show featured guests, each of which could only do one appearance on the show. no repeaters, no exceptions. always awesome.
who was your favorite muppet?
